Quick answer: An exposed concrete slab and a purpose-selected futsal floor are different surfaces. For a match venue, start with the competition’s playing-surface requirements, then compare documented floor systems for ball response, player movement, installation and maintenance. Do not choose a floor on an unsupported promise that it prevents knee injuries.
A concrete base may be part of the construction beneath a futsal floor. The question is whether that slab should also be the finished playing surface. Separating those two decisions makes it easier to evaluate a renovation, specify repairs and compare quotations for the same work.
What do the futsal rules require?
The 2025–26 FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game, Law 1 require an even, smooth surface without an abrasive finish and express a preference for wood. Ask the organizer which edition and additional venue requirements apply to your project before specifying the surface.
“Sports flooring” is a broad description. A floor intended for basketball, a general recreation area or a weight room does not automatically meet a futsal brief. Require the supplier to identify the proposed use and provide documents for the exact construction.
Concrete, wood or synthetic futsal flooring?
| Option | What to evaluate | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Exposed concrete | Finish, cracks, contamination, surface regularity and compatibility with the venue brief | Whether the organizer accepts it as a playing surface; do not equate a usable base with an accepted finish |
| Wood sports floor | Complete floor build-up, maintenance access, moisture conditions and non-sport use | Applicable event requirements, installation conditions and evidence for the proposed system |
| Continuous synthetic sports surface | Finish, seams, ball response, movement and fixing method | Futsal-specific suitability, relevant test reports and a compatible prepared base |
| Modular sports tiles | Joints, tile movement, surface texture, ball travel and perimeter details | Written suitability for futsal and the actual venue; generic court-tile claims are insufficient |
Which performance questions matter most?
Ball response and surface consistency
Ask how the finished system will be assessed for the intended sport. Review joints, lines, transitions and local changes across the playing area. A small sample helps explain a material, but it cannot show every behavior of a complete installed court.
Grip and player movement
Review the exact surface finish with the proposed footwear and maintenance method. Ask what test information is available and under which conditions it was obtained. A result for a different finish, backing or installation should not be treated as evidence for the quoted system.
Impact response
Compare documented results for the whole floor build-up. Thickness and a hand-pressed sample are not substitutes for a relevant test report. A laboratory force-reduction figure should not be presented as a percentage reduction in player injuries.

Can you install futsal flooring over an existing concrete court?
Potentially, but the installer must accept the base before installation. Record cracking, uneven areas, coatings, contamination, moisture and any water entry. The proposed flooring system determines which preparation, testing, adhesives or restraints are required.
- Survey and measure the existing court, entrances and fixed equipment.
- Obtain the proposed product’s base requirements and inspection method.
- Agree repairs and moisture or drainage work with the responsible contractor.
- Approve seams, lines, edges and changes in finished floor height.
- Define inspection, curing and reopening responsibilities before work starts.
For exposed or partly covered courts, describe rain, sunlight, temperature changes and drainage. Indoor suitability does not establish outdoor suitability.
What maintenance should be included in the choice?
Request a written routine for removing dust and debris, cleaning the surface, inspecting seams and handling damaged areas. Confirm the permitted chemicals, equipment and reopening conditions. Compare the work required with the staff and equipment the facility actually has.
Ask how a localized repair would be completed and whether matching spare material should be ordered. Compare the cost of preparation, installation, maintenance and downtime as well as the flooring price; do not assume a fixed service life from a material name.
Frequently asked questions
Is rubber gym flooring the same as futsal flooring?
No. Weight-room requirements and futsal playing-surface requirements differ. A rubber mat selected for free weights should not be substituted for a futsal system without suitable evidence and project approval.
Are all interlocking tiles suitable for futsal?
No. The exact tile, joints, base and installed response need review. Ask for written futsal suitability and any documents required by the organizer.
Does a cushioned floor guarantee fewer injuries?
No such guarantee can be made from a generic material description or one floor-test result. Use documented performance information to compare systems without turning it into a medical claim.
Prepare a futsal flooring comparison
Send Courtiva the venue type, playing level, court plan, base condition and organizer requirements. Our sports flooring range can provide an initial discussion point; the proposed system still needs a futsal-specific review.
